5 books that...are amazing poetry collections //my favourite poets

 Hi Everyone,

5 Books That...is a feature on my blog where I talk about five books that have something in common or can be grouped together for a certain reason. I usually do about one a month but there is no fixed schedule.

Welcome back to 5 books that....! Today I am sharing poetry books. Enjoy :)

Personally, I love poetry. I did a post a while back about Emily Brontë and what her poetry means to me and although she is my favourite, I have a few other poetry books that I want to tell you about today.

The Complete Poems of Emily Bronte

I won't linger too long on this as I already have a whole post about it! With that said, Emily Bronte's poems are passionate and beautifully empowering works that explore life, death, nature and the mystery world of Gondal that Emily made with Anne. I love the Brontes so much and Emily Bronte's poems are a huge part of that. I highly recommend the penguin black spine edition of her poetry because it's got really good notes and introduction by Janet Gezari. I enjoy reading the notes to each poem a lot.

Extra Note: you may have heard about the so called Honresfield manuscript being put up for auction. It contains original papers from authors such as Jane Austen but also the Brontë's. The British Library and all the respective houses and trusts for the different authors have created a crowdfunding page to collect donations and hopefully buy the collection. This would mean that it could be seen by scholars and the general public and preserved for future generations too. Alternatively, it may disappear into a private collection where it may not be seen for centuries. You can donate here. Even a small donation may go a long way. The aim is basically to buy the collection and distribute it around to relevant places, such as the Bronte Parsonage Museum for Bronte manuscripts, which is where I think they belong.

Ariel by Sylvia Plath

This is a fairly recent addition to my shelves and firstly, isn't this edition beautiful? I haven't had a chance to read that much of it but I love what I have read. Some are about bees and I have a hive so that's really cool! There are also several about mental health, which is probably what she is best known for. Also, a character in The Paper and Hearts Society loves Sylvia Plath!

Poems To Fall In Love With (chosen and illustrated by Chris Riddell)

These is a beautiful poetry collection that means so much to me because that is where I first read Love and Friendship by Emily Bronte and fell in love with not only that specific poem (it's one of my favourite poems ever!) but Emily's writing style. I have read so many more poems in this collection that have warmed my heart and it is such stunning book as well. The illustrations are charming! I also own Poems To Save The World With which I also love but haven't had the chance to read as much from. There is one more that I don't own yet but hopefully will soon, which is called Poems To Live Your Life By.

The Lost Words by Robert McFarlene and Jackie Morris

I got The Lost Words at Christmas and really love it. If you don't know, this is a collection of nature poems with absolutely magnificent illustrations. They are each based around an animal or plant and are acrostic poems. But beware that it is quite big in size! The full double page illustrations are my favourite though and I love the art style.

The Lost Spells by Robert McFarlene and Jackie Morris

I only bought The Lost Spells a few weeks ago but already love it so much. I think I prefer this to The Lost Words because it is slightly smaller  so easier to read. The poems are acrostic (in the same way as the Lost Words) and that adds another level to them. This is a truly beautiful book to delve into and I highly recommend! <3

There you have it: 5 poetry collections I love. I know The Lost Words and The Lost Spells are very similar but I wanted to include them both! Happy Reading :)

Note to email subscribers: I recently changed email subscription service. You do not need to do anything but if you experience glitches then that is most likely the reason. I did send you all an email about it! Thank you so much for your support!

  1. I also love poetry and I adore the pictures that go with it in some of the books such as The Lost Spells and The Lost Words.
    Well done and keep going!
