I am so excited to share with you the sequel to The Paper & Hearts Society which is called 'Read with Pride'. If you haven't already then be sure to check out the post from December last year about it. It also featured in my 'Top 3 Picks from 2019!' , coming 2nd in my rankings. Read With Pride was released recently and I absolutely adored it!
This time it is written from the perspective of Olivia rather than Tabby. It shadows Olivia through her last year at secondary. She plans to take time to study for her exams but when the library initiates a new rule meaning students have to have a permission slip to retrieve books with mentions of LGTBQ+ people as one parent complained, her plans are put on hold.
Olivia creates a group with some new friends she meets and make a group called Read With Pride to try and reverse the rules. At first it is low key but then they get a petition going, go on social media, do crazy things like book drops and poster drops in the school, but the pressure is getting to her and she no longer has much time to spend with Cassie and The Paper And Hearts Society. She runs out of time to revise and gets the lowest mark on an exam ever.
She ends up not sleeping at night and living in a subconscious state. In the end, she has to drop something: this can't carry on. She has to allow herself time to sleep! But will all of her efforts be enough to save the future of LGTBQ+ people at the school? They need those books, to help them when their parents won't. She was lucky: her parents were behind her every step of the way, but she knew others weren't.
This is a heartfelt book about the importance of taking it easy sometimes, even if you are as organised as Olivia! It talks about the importance of LGTBQ+ people having access to places that can help them to feel comfortable in their own skin, all while still including more bookish fun! It left me with a smile and I absolutely cannot wait for the next one in the series to be unveiled in February 2021!
